Horrible things, sometimes with actual tentacles. Al-Hazred glimpsed them, John Dee summoned them, HP Lovecraft wrote about them, and Alan Turing mapped the paths from our universe to theirs. It turns out that mathematics really is magic, or at least that aspects of it describe, enable and power magic. And computing power supercharges it.<br/><br/>The right calculation can call up entities from other, older universes, or invoke their powers. Invisibility? Easy! Binding lesser demons to your will? Trivial! Opening up the way for the Great Old Ones to come through and eat our brains? Unfortunately, much too easy.<br/><br/>That’s where the Laundry comes in. It’s a branch of the British secret service tasked with preventing alien gods from wiping out all life on Earth, with a policy focus on the United Kingdom. You work for the Laundry. The hours are long, the pay is bad, and the bureaucracy is stifling, but unfortunately, you know too much to really have a choice in the matter.<br/><br/>There are some upsides – you get to play with all sorts of magically enhanced tech, from necronom-iPhones loaded with cutting-edge occult apps to basilisk guns that [REDACTED]. _marbella-party-house-stormed-by-police-after-being-39fraudulently39-rented-on-airbnb.webp "A Marbella party house was stormed by police after allegedly being fraudulently let out on Airbnb – for thousands of pounds a week. <br/><br/>The property, popular with British tourists, is said to have been used as a party house – with rowdy dos going on into the early hours.<br/><br/>Residents on the street say loud music was a common occurrence, with drugs and even weapons allegedly being spotted in and around the property.<br/><br/>Yesterday (25) residents claim police arrived to evict holidaymakers. <br/><br/>The property is understood to have been booked until February next year at £3400 per week with reservation charges of €1000 per guest. <br/><br/>Locals say the owner has now changed his locks and insists he had 'no idea' what had been going on at his holiday home after leaving it in the hands of a maintenance man.<br/><br/>It is understood it was then let out to another tenant without the owner's permission who then sub-let the property on Airbnb.<br/><br/>Residents on the street who witnessed the party house in full swing said: “It almost turned into a party villa with 40 plus people throwing crazy parties with drugs and alcohol. <br/><br/>“It’s been going on for eight months, it’s been going on for a long time – there's been a high turnover of people on short term lettings. <br/><br/>“The actual owner is back in his own property and has changed the locks and everything else and says he doesn't want to rent it out as a holiday villa. <br/><br/>“He turned up and a load of people were in his house who shouldn't be there, he wasn't very happy at all. <br/><br/>“He’s very unhappy with the maintenance man, he’s extremely angry with him, nobody told him what was going on. <br/><br/>“It was almost an open house, the doors were open – people were taking drugs, using NOS balloons, there was just lots of pretty strange stuff going on. <br/><br/>“Marbella is a weird and wonderful place at best of times.” <br/><br/>Videos from local residents show police, journalists and security cars lining the usually quiet street. <br/><br/>Guests and estate agents were seen arguing in the footage as tensions flared.<br/><br/>Police cars were seen patrolling the street and a locksmith was present to stop other unauthorised guests from accessing the property.<br/><br/>One local added: \")
_pearly-king-who-inspired-del-boy-campaigns-to-keep-cockney-tradition-alive.webp "One of the last remaining 'Pearly Kings' who was the inspiration behind Del Boy is fighting to keep the Cockney tradition alive - saying there are only around 12 left.<br/><br/>George Major, 86, who was crowned The Pearly King of Peckham more than 65 years ago, said there were once more than 400 like him.<br/><br/>But he says he is now only one of around a dozen left carrying the torch. <br/><br/>He still wears his original pearls with pride to welcome visitors six days a week at the world's only Cockney museum that he set up four years ago.<br/><br/>But he said the younger generation were shying away from the east end Victorian tradition - and it was now in grave danger of dying out for good.<br/><br/>And launching his new campaign to 'save the pearlies' he said it was vital more awareness of its history and meaning was passed down.<br/><br/>George grew up working on the market in the south-London suburb from the age of four and was such a major inspiration behind the classic sitcom Only Fools and Horses he was named “Del Boy the First”. <br/><br/>He recalls being followed at the time by the show's writer John Sullivan while he worked as a costermonger with 'Granddad Fred' and a 'lanky bloke' they called the 'plonker.'<br/><br/>The similarities don't end there - with multiple tales of his exploits being used on the show. <br/><br/>He famously once sold 'Cockney smog' - milk bottles filled with exhaust fumes - to American tourists - that's believed to be the inspiration behind the famous 'Peckham Spring' episode.<br/><br/>He was crowned the Pearly King of Peckham aged 20 - and has been collecting items ever since.<br/><br/>George now spends his days showing visitors around his museum near Epsom, Surrey, and taking his cheerful pearly way to groups, events and nursing homes - but said he was sad schools no longer invited him in for talks.<br/><br/>He said: “In 1930 there were around 400 genuine pearlies but now there are only about a dozen or so of us left.<br/><br/>“The museum helps to keep the Pearly tradition alive by teaching new generations about it.<br/><br/>\")
