The film was announced in September 2022 as a sequel to War for the Planet of the Apes, set many years after Caeser led his tribe of apes to an oasis paradise. The fourth film in the franchise will be directed by Wes Ball, of Maze Runner fame, and has the opportunity to capitalize on one of the most compelling aspects of its previous three entries.<br/><br/>The primary way the film can utilize this element is through the promise of its story. With the title of the film and its released premise promising an exploration of the kingdom Caeser helped build, along with elements from both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' ending and War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom can have one special element.The aspect is in the film's antagonist, specifically Koba from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. While Woody Harrelson's Colonel was a good antagonist for War for the Planet of the Apes, there is no denying that Koba was far and above the best villain of the original trilogy. This was helped because Rise of the Planet of the Apes did not have a central villain outside of Tom Felton's purposefully dislikable zoo caretaker. Koba, who almost appeared in War, was easily the biggest threat to Caeser and was a genuinely fearsome antagonist.<br/><br/>This largely came from his established history as an abused ape but also because he was an ape himself. As the original trilogy was so focused on the apes sticking together, Koba's villainous turn was terrifying and compelling. With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes taking place after War, therefore likely meaning that most human military forces are nonexistent due to Caeser's victory over the Colonel and the U.S. Army, the film could introduce another ape as a villain.One of the reasons this could be a great antagonist for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' story comes from Koba's effectiveness as a villain and because it would make sense for the franchise. In terms of the latter point, War for the Planet of the Apes introduced Bad Ape, an ape from a zoo in Nevada that was also intelligent. With the Simian Flu making apes more intelligent and having spread across the U.S. for a decade by the point of Kingdom, it makes perfect sense for other ape communities to be scattered across the country.<br/><br/>In establishing another ape colony, the film could introduce a Koba-like villain on an even bigger scale. Rather than having an ape infiltrate Caeser's party from the inside like Koba did, introducing another ape that is more like a replacement Caeser for Kingdom's rival ape tribe could be a very compelling concept.
